Introducing Lyons & Pakchar, a new songwriting team mixing R&B, Pop and Theatre. They recently recorded their debut album #LOvE at The Cutting Room in New York City.
The Indie Place had the opportunity to chat with Douglas Lyons and Ethan Pakchar.
What was the moment you both realized that you would become a songwriting duo?
Douglas Lyons: I don’t think we really had that moment. We sorta of fell into it. We started as buddies on The Book of Mormon 1st National Tour, we started writing music together and this spring decided to give it all a name. We continued working, some opportunities came about and now we are here.
Ethan Pakchar: I thought it was a one-time thing when Doug approached me with his first song—but he kept coming back with new songs and we would workshop them. The first time we sat down together was in August of 2012 in Denver when we were in tech with the Book of Mormon. By the fourth or fifth time we knew we were a team.
What is #LOvE?
DL: “#LOVE,” an 11-song album that will be released digitally Dec. 9, mixes pop, R&B and theatre to explore “the good, bad and awkward roller coasters in human relationships.”
EP: #Love is our first album. 11 original songs recorded live in NYC August 19th, 2013.
What made you decide, let’s record an album?
DL: We figured a live recording of the songs we had written would be smart start for L & P because an album is a great way to introduce yourself to the public. We are writing a show as well but #LOVE allow millions of people to know our sound in the meantime.
EP: We had a lot of songs and we really wanted to present them with a bang in NYC. What better way than that and make it a live recording?
Your debut was during Broadway Unlocked, what was that like for you?
DL: Ethan is surely the more calm one of us two. I couldn’t sit down. It was amazing to hear people’s reaction to the music, your audience is your best scene partner; it was also for a great cause!
EP: Stressful and exciting! It was a great opportunity. We were honored to be in that show. Our music was well received and the concert was for a great cause.
You have a variety of performers from the theatre world who will be performing on this album, what were you looking for when choosing the performers for your songs?
DL: Since we blend a lot of styles in our music, we wanted to have a performer that could really encapsulate the genre and just own it! We were thrilled with the performances.
EP: Our music is milkshake of r&b/pop and theatre. So when we find vocalists we love for them to carry at-least two of those three qualities in the tone of their voice. We also love using fantastic singers who have yet to hit the Broadway Stage.
You successfully funded this project with an indiegogo campaign, tell us about your experience.
DL: The indiegogo campaign was a lot of fun and stress. It takes consistent effort and you have to annoy alot of your friends and family for money they don’t have. We ended up raising more money than we thought we could and it’s all been very helpful to producing the concert and live recording.
EP: It was really great seeing friends and family believe in us and help us with the album. This album is dedicated to them!
What’s next for Lyons and Pakchar? Another album? Maybe a musical?
DL: All of the above! We’re working on a couple shows right now. Stay tuned! :)
EP: We have a release concert for the album Dec 9th at Rockwood music Hall at 9pm! We are writing a musical entitled ’79 based off the score of #LOVE. And who knows what else is up our sleeve!
