Acoustic performers have always garnered an audience and Brie Cecil is no exception. The singer, songwriter recently released her sophomore album ‘Handmade’ featuring the tracks “All of Me” and “Get Through”. Cecil’s music paints a clear picture in the listener’s mind. It elicits specific feelings that seem to be characteristic of her style, namely warm, deep, introspective feelings. Her music is thoughtful and tender, as is exemplified in both tracks “All of Me” and “Get Through”.
Cecil’s raw and sultry voice, reminiscent of Sheryl Crow and Brandi Carlile, is easy to listen to, and she would have no trouble captivating an audience with her voice alone. Her song “All of Me” features a nice vocal tone from the singer but is a bit underwhelming. The underlying guitar is extremely repetitive and would greatly benefit from some complexity. However, Cecil’s honest and heartfelt lyrics are what make the song special and provide a much needed connection between Cecil and her audience.
Cecil’s other single, “Get Through”, is clearly the stronger of the two tracks. The guitar riffs are beautifully structured and add many layers to the song. The riffs and melody are more blues inspired here than on “All of Me” and support Cecil’s vocal style perfectly. The lyrics for “Get Through” are about moving on and growing stronger, which is fitting since this second track already shows growth from the singer.
Cecil’s music would be at home in any coffee shop or pub. With some work, she could tour with the likes of The Lumineers or Mumford and Sons in the future, as her music would fit in well with their sounds. Although she hasn’t quite reached her potential yet as a singer and songwriter yet, she is on her way there. Even more so, as ‘Handmade’ is only her second album, she has plenty of time and space to learn and grow as an artist. With a little more experience and practice, Cecil has the possibility to grow her fan base to even bigger numbers. If “All of Me” and “Get Through” are any indication, Cecil is well equipped to handle that challenge.
