There is no shortage of nostalgia for the nineties these days, and as a nineties kid myself, I can appreciate this romanticized craze for the decade and especially for its music. Those who also have a slightly irrational love for the years 1990 to 1999 will likely appreciate Morning Fame and their newest single “The Golden One”. This song combines all the best parts of nineties alternative rock and pop rock while making a place for itself in this generation.
“The Golden One” features mellow guitars and smooth vocals from Joe Liranzo and Vik Kapur. Drummer Al Dennis and bassist Rob Gilberti provide a solid base that drives the song forward. The track manages to find a perfect balance between lightness and darkness in both melody and lyrical content. The song’s lyrics are poetic and heartfelt, making it easy for the listener to relate to the words being sung. The song has a bit of progressive rock influence in the guitar lines with the catchiness of a great pop song. The chorus will be stuck in one’s head for days. Still, the best quality of “The Golden One”, and indeed all of Morning Fame’s music, is that it is refreshingly free of gimmicks.
While so much rock music now features inordinate amounts of technological tweaks, “The Golden One” is pure pop and alternative rock goodness. It is simple in the best way possible while still maintaining the complexity of its songwriting and musical execution. For fans of popular rock bands REM, Gin Blossoms, and Vertical Horizon, Morning Fame hold their own against more established bands. “The Golden One” is from ‘Back and Forth’, the band’s compilation album featuring their first EP ‘A Lasting Place’. This may be a single from their first real full length, but Morning Fame already sound like seasoned veterans. “The Golden One” displays a maturity of sound and musical experience not often found in the early stages of a band’s career. The track moves along at a pleasant pace, ending with a somewhat unexpected, but not unwelcome, breakdown.
“The Golden One” is interesting, enjoyable, and well-written. For first time listeners of Morning Fame, this single is a great introduction to their sound. “The Golden One” is one of the best indie/alt rock songs I’ve heard in a while and it is obvious that Morning Fame have incredible amounts of talent that will carry them far in their careers.
